Subject: Etymology/meaning of a particular word

Dear list, I have a question about the element "wold[e]" that turns up
in some place names in the Netherlands and also as a fictional name in
J.R.R. Tolkien's works as a proper name "the Wold". Does anyone here
know anything of about its meaning or history?

Might the following be of use to you?

Low Saxon (Low German) /vold/ _Wold_ ~ _Woold_ ~ _Wohld_ [vo.lt] 'forest',
'woodland' (m., pl. _Wo(o)lden_)

Dutch: _wold_ > _woud_* id.
German: _Wald_ id.

(* regular shift in Dutch and Afrikaans (and Zeelandic?): ...old > ...oud; cf.
_old_ > _oud_ 'old'; _kold_ > _koud_ 'cold'; _gold_ > _goud_ 'gold')
