Subject: LL-L: "Language politics" LOWLANDS-L, 20.MAR.2001 (03) [D/E]

A chairde,

I was delighted this morning to find an article on the
establishment of the Ulster-Scots Board in the the
latest issue of the Irish-language magazine "Comhar".
Treating Ulster-Scots with respect, compassion, and a
sense of solidarity that exemplified the co-operation
that can be achieved on this island, I am certain that
it challenged and rectified the misconception held by
many people in Ireland that Ulster-Scots is, in Irish,
"teanga DIY na nAontachtaí" ("the Do It Yourself
language of the Unionists"), reactionary to the
promotion of Gaelic.

I was heartened by the sensitive treatment afforded to
Ulster-Scots and excited to discover that one of the
members of the board was an Irish speaker. What the
article proved was that the comradeship between
minority languages - majority languages [sic] -
against the thalassocratic "divide and rule" policies
of the imperial state will never win out.

If there was ever a manifestation of "unite", then
today's article on "Albanais Uladh" (Ulster Scots)
proved it eloquently.

Go raibh maith agaibh agus maith shibhse,

Críostóir
