From: "Roger Thijs" <roger.thijs at euro-support.be>
Subject: LL-L: "Place names"

My site with Limburgish placenames
http://www.euro-support.be/langbel/limdorp.htm
is progressed so far that all municipalities (with link to their name in
dialect) are listed.

The contents of the infobox per municipality still varies, and it will
take still several weeks for getting it complete for each municipality
(with some etymology, history, list of parishes etc.)

Some municpal names sound strage in modern Dutch, as e.g.:
Kuttekoven, Muizen, Veulen

Modern names may be misleading etymologywise:
Winterhoven e.g. does not refer to the winter but to: Winidhari's hof

As somebody on the list suggested, when etymological sources differ,
it's wise to list them all.
What I did e.g. for the muciplality of Eksel:
Archives: VIIIe eeuw Ochinsala, XIe eeuw Ekinsala, 1153 Hecsele
Etymology: 1. (Mansion): Oko + sali: woonplaats van Oko
2. (Gemeentekrediet): agnis + lauha (ekster + bosje op hoge zandgrond)

Actually the author of the 4 vols. description of the municipalties by
the Gemeentkrediet based his conclusion on the 1153 version Hecsele,
while Carnoy went back to the 8th century. It's difficult though, when
listing a large volume of data, to dig into detail and motivate one's
choice.

All comments are welcome. Does anybody know of a similar index to
municipalities on the web?

Regards,
Roger
