I have been continuing with the development of a linguistic + historical
description of the municipalities of Belgian Limburg, starting from
page:

I virtually only worked on the South these 2 days:

I have added walloon names where-ever I got them, and I added the old
names + etymology for all municipalties in the South. (I try to do the
etymology for the North next week-end).

Though we are far off the center of Gaul, and many old names have been
romanized + germanized, some celtic names were maintained.

E.g.  (pasted from the pages, in Dutch):

Tongeren
(Carnoy) Keltische volksstam: ingezworenen (cf. Iers: tuinge, Kymr.
tung)

Bilzen
(Carnoy-Mansion) Keltisch: bel + isa: blinkend water
bels + ina: veld + water; Beyl + water (Beyl is oude naam v.d. streek)
belsa: grasland
(Meyer-Lübke) het water in het moeras van Beyl

Duras
(Carnoy) Kelt.: duro + aco: dorp bij het fort

Beverst
(Carnoy) Biberussa --> Biberist: bever + rivier (Kelt. -ussa;
Sanskr. -utsa water)

Lauw
Kelt. luta (modder, moeras) --> lûda (germ.), lûda'ica (rom.)

Diets-Heur
(Carnoy) Kelt. idara: rivier

Heks
(Carnoy) rivier Herk: hark + isa, ark + isa
Herk: ara (Kelt. rivier- --> arca: kleine rivier)

and for the moment one, I accidentally handled with, for the North
Dilsen
(Carnoy) Til-is-ona (Keltisch: vuil water)

The motivation why a certain etymology is choosen is often linked to
similar names in France or in Belgium. Unfortunately I cannot include
these justifications on my pages.

For the non-celtic origins (germanic and romance) I refer to the pages
for the South (Haspengouw West & East)
