Hilsen,

It's undoubtedly a difficult one. Prepositions that seem to be cognate
really can be used in quite different ways. An awful lot of it simply
depends on usage, and it's really a case of having several right answers to
the same question. I can well understand why English speakers would say
'married *to*' yet Scots speakers would say 'merriet *on*', both make sense.
There are also variations within English, and cases where even native
speakers wouldn't be too sure ('*on* a street' or '*in* a street? 'by foot'
or 'on foot'?)

So as I say, yes there's a certain logic, but it's a logic that leads to
several right answers, any of which can be taken for any single given
language (or even dialect).
