>From my own Edinburgh experience Ian is dead right about this 'ie' suffix.
Working Class folks like us frequently used it in this context. Got to the
stage where school lunches (skuil dunners tae us) were referred to as 'The
Dinneries'such assemblies were very noisy anyway :-). In 1965 when home on
leave from Ghana I was amused to find that the local ice cream van was now
'The Icie'. Calling the local chip shop,  'The Chippie' was very common and

this has spread to Australia as well. There was a great book on Edinburgh
chidrens' songs called 'The Singing Street' published in the 1950's in
which
this diminutive was dicussed at some length. Sorry the author's name
escapes
me and I can't find who I lent my copy to.
