Subject: Names

I have come across the spelling 'Strahan" several times. I assume it's
the same name we have been discussing.

Reinhard/Ron

Subject: What does it mean?

My family name originates in Ostfriesland where the eastern form of
Frisian has almost completely disappeared (Saterlan excepted). The
spelling my branch of the
family uses (Sayenga) is matched by a family group in Iowa where they
use Saienga. The spelling on my grandfather's naturalization certificate
is Sajenga. In the
texts of the Ortsippenbucher prepared by German genealogists, numerous
variations appear, such as Saayenga, and Sajunga, but the standard
current spelling in
Ostfriesland is Zaayenga. Can anyone confirm that the roots are probably
a verb "zaaien" (+ "inga) meaning to sow seeds into a farmers field?
Donald Sayenga.
