Subject: etymology

Hi everybody

I'm sorry to bother all of you with this one, and my
apologies for cross-posting.

I'm looking for the full etymology of the English word
"night". One of the main points is that i cannot find
a reason for the vowel change in Germanic _*naht_/OE
_naeht_/_neaht_ and OE _niht_.
In one etymological dictionary i found something about
paradigmatic leveling, but i fail to find the full
declination of OE _naeht_/_neaht_.

Also a few additonal questions: I'm in a debate with
somebody who states that English _night_ is *derived*
from either
* Latin _nox_/_noct-_
* Greek _nux_/_nukt-_.
* OFr. _nuit_/_nuict_

I'm running out of arguments within the boundaries of
either common knowledge, and netiquette, politeness
and friendliness to convince him that either of these
are cognates, and that
OE niht < Gmc *naht < PIE _nokw-t-_
and NOT
OE niht < Latin noct-
and NOT
OE niht < Greek nuct-

Can somebody please help me!

Countless thanks in advance!!!

Frank Verhoft
