Subject: night

Hoi Laaglanders!

Concerning "night" as Frank wrote about:

I'm probably stepping into an area I know nothing about, but I'm going
to
give it
a stab. English has had many influences: the Romans in England, the
Danish
influence,
the German influence (Angles, Saxons, Jutes, etc.) and finally the
French
influence
with the Norman invasion in 1066. German on the other hand probably
already
had
their word for night and brought that with them when they went to
England.
So, even
though Latin and German are of Indo-European stock, I wouldn't think
that
the Latin,
or Greek word for that matter, would have much to do with our word
night,
since
one can clearly see from the OE and ME words (_*naht_/OE_naeht_/_neaht_
and
OE _niht_
as Frank mentioned) that the relationship between "Nacht" and "night"
are
more readily
seen than with the Latin or Greek words. I would point out to your
"friend"
the movements
of these peoples. I believe that it would follow, logically, that your
argument is the better
argument.

Best wishes Frank,

Kevin Browne
