Regarding the discussion on Bogeymen, Bogels and Butzemann ...
When I was very young my Grandfather told me that Santa Claus (Sinter
Klaas)had an Elf called "Black Peter" who came with him to punish bad
children ? I have never found any reference to this character in Scots
Folklore. Has anyone heard of "Black Peter" in Low Saxon, Frisian or
Dutch
Folk belief ?

"Bogel" itself is also a very interesting word, in many of the early
Scots
poems which have been found in the area where I live describe the Bogel
as a
ghost or an evil spirit. Later stories and legends then develop the
Bogel
into being a creature which is more like a Troll /Sea Troll or as we
would
call it a Trow (Pronounced - Troo).

Hi, Ross!

What you described above corresponds to the German tradition of Knecht
Ruprecht, who accompanies Father Christmas (_Weihnachtsmann_) on
Christmas, while Santa Claus (_(Sankt) Nikolaus_) comes alone on
December 6.

There are several versions of this in Lowlands Saxon (Low German) as
well. I would have to dig around for specifics. _De swatte Peter_
(Black Peter) rings a bell.

Cheers!
Reinhard/Ron
