Subject: General Inquiry 2002.08.23

Perhaps someone can tell me if there are any indigenous nomadic
/travelling
communities of a Germanic origin which still exist in modern Central or
Eastern Europe today who are not related to the wider Roma Gypsy
peoples ?
For example, in both Scotland and Ireland there have always been
"Tinkers"
(A commonly used but derogatory term for Scottish and Irish Travelers
relating to a time when most were tin smiths)
It is thought that the Travelling Folk are descended from those who were
displaced by the Potato Famine and the Highland Clearance. They may have
also spoken a language which was a hybrid of Scots and Gaelic but the
issue
has become confused over the last few years due mainly to the fact that
a
large number of people took to living in Caravans as recently as the
early
1990's to avoid paying the much hated Poll Tax introduced by the then
Conservative Government on homeowners.
