From: R. F. Hahn <sassisch at yahoo.com>
Subject: Administrativa

Dear Lowlanders,

Once in a while I receive an automated message (from an unidentified
sender) like the one below:

===start quote===
Date: Mon Feb 11 19:34:30 2002
From: <>
To: owner-lowlands-l at LISTSERV.LINGUISTLIST.ORG
Subject: Network Associates Webshield - e-mail Content Alert

Network Associates WebShield SMTP V4.5 MR1a on esf-scan intercepted a
mail from <owner-lowlands-l at LISTSERV.LINGUISTLIST.ORG> which caused the
Content Filter improper Word2 to be triggered. Please check your
message for proper use of words and resend.
===end quote===

Obviously, one of our subscribers is protected by a "smut filter," and a
certain word Aviad wrote in a quote from Webster's Dictionary did not
pass inspection. I am not quoting Aviad (or better, Webster's) here,
because I want this message to get through to the thusly protected
subscriber, to let him or her know why there may be gaps in the flow of
some discussions.

Since we here discuss language and culture among adults and a few older
adolescents, "improper" words may be mentioned once in a while, though I
do not condone or let pass anything really "strong" and gratuitous.
Since this only happens once in a while, and only one subscriber has
this filter, I grin and bear the error message annoyance. I do find it
somewhat impolite, though, that the automated messages are anonymous and
do not tell me which address is "shielded."

Regards,
Reinhard/Ron
