Subject: Secret codes

[English version below]

Leve Lüüd',

Jüst nu kreeg' ik vun mien Broder Michael uut Hamborg 'n Mail. Dat dücht em,
dat us Vadder, de ja ook to de "Ketelklopper"-Rubriek tohöör, maal seggt hett,
dat he düsse Geheemspraak kunn, un dat he ehr up Düütsch (d.h. in sien
Missingsch) "Hafenplatt" nööm. Ik harr jümmer meent, mit "Hafenplatt" meen he
so'n mengeleerden Haven-Jargon mit "Platt", Missingsch un besünnere Wöör vun
't Havenflaag. Man kann angahn, dat Michael recht hett. Weett dat wen mank
Ju?

Grötens,
Reinhard/Ron

Folks,

Just now I received a message from my brother Michael from Hamburg. It seems
to him that our father, who belonged to the general _Ketelklopper_ category as
well, once mentioned that he was proficient in this secret code, that he
referred to it as _Hafenplatt_ (Port "Platt") in German (i.e., in his
Missingsch). I had always assumed that by _Hafenplatt_ he meant a mixed dock
workers' jargon with elements from Low Saxon (Low German), Missingsch (German
on Low Saxon substrate) and special trade terms. However, it is quite
possible that Michael is right. Does any of you know?

Regards,
Reinhard/Ron
