Subject: Hogmanay

I wish you all a happy prosperous New Year but I have a problem. Someone
asked me the origin of the word 'Hogmanay' and I honestly admit I do not
know the answer. If it is gaelic we'll leave it there but just in case
it
has relevant connections I ask if anyone can answer the question.

As an addition: Westerlauwer Frisian has two words basically,
depending on dialect. I would say "kôb" [kO:p] (where the p is softer
than
usual), also "kobbe" [kob@] exists, beside the word
"miuw" (also written "meau") [mjo:] (maybe also [miu:] exists?].
The first has relatives in Dutch "kobbe" (may be dialectical,
even ingwaeonic?), and also Helgolandic Frisian "kub" eg.
