Folk,

John Tait's remarks apply equally in Ireland, where
the people who talk *about* Scots, whatever
institution or organization they represent, almost
inevitably are unable to speak *in* Scots. Again,
Scots speakers themselves generally have no interest,
and in fact often a disdain for, the 'Ulster Scots
movement'.

Even the political side is actually equivalent. The
involvement of those who favour Scottish independence
could be read as those who favour 'separation from
England'. Likewise in Ireland the Ulster Scots
'movement' attracts support from those who favour
'separation from the Republic of Ireland'. So the fact
that on one side of the sheuch it's Scottish
Nationalists and on the other side it's Ulster
Unionists who get involved is not as contradictory as
it might at first seem. And likewise, just because one
is an Ulster Unionist in Northern Ireland does not
make one an Ulster Scots supporter - indeed, the very
opposite is often the case.

All the best,

=====
