From: "Marco Evenhuis" <evenhuis at zeelandnet.nl>
Subject: LL-L "Etymology" 2002.03.14 (01) [E]

Luc wrote with the regard to the six words he mentioned:

"I have the impression that these words are
intertwined, a toad and a lizard standing for evil women
(respectively fat and vicious ones)"

Indeed in Zeêuws, words like _padde_, _assefiester_ and _aekse_ can be
used for an evil woman.
But looking back at the six words I translated in Zeêuws for Luc, I
notice
something else as well: sounds like _aeke_ and _akke_ can be heard
within a lot of these words (akketesse, 'aekse, daeke...). This reminds
me of the
word _aeke_(ekke, aekes, ekkes), which can be translated with something
like 'shame on you!' (Dutch: foei!). It's also used in some expressions,
eg: _den eênen is ekke (aeke) en den aoren is foei_: they're both no
good.
Furthermore, the verb _aeke_ or _aekn_ means to burn your throat,
_akkenaoie(n)_ means having an argument and _aekelik_ means sick or
nasty.
An onomatopoeia (_aeke_) that works through in other words?

Regards,

Marco
