From: "John M. Tait" <jmtait at wirhoose.co.uk>
Subject: Scots Sounds

I'm putting together a short description of Scots sounds for my website,
and I'm especially unsure about the relationship of [I], [3] and [V]
sounds in Central dialects, in words like 'fit', 'wid', etc. In
Shetlandic the relationship is clear - [I] and [3] are both allophones
of the /I/ phoneme, [I] preceding voiced and [3] voiceless consonants,
and the [V] sound, in regions where it occurs, is a realisation of /o/,
which is a different phoneme altogether; but this doesn't apply to
Central dialects. I wondered if anybody - especially Sandy and Andy,
perhaps - could elucidate?

John M. Tait.
