Subject: LL-L "English vocabulary"

Hi, folks,
I have a little question. I'm sitting here in
California listening to newsradio (Australia; I'm an
incurable Aussiephile) and heard a certain situation
referred to as a 'two edged sword'. In the U.S. we
say a 'double edged sword'. How about in other
English speaking countries? I'd be curious to hear.
Oh, and does this expression occur in other Lowlands
Languages? Hoe zegt men dat in het nederlands? enz.
Thanks.

Stan,

Good to hear from you.

I have heard both "two-edged sword" and "double-edged sword" in both
Australia and the United States. In fact, note the title of John
("Jack") Whiteside Parsons' novel: _Freedom is a Two-Edged Sword_.
(Jack Parsons, a native of Los Angeles, was a rocket scientist, an
occultist and a member of Aleister Crowley's magical order. He died in
1952 in a mysterious laboratory explosion.)

It is _tweesniedig(et) Sweert_ in Low Saxon (Low German), North Saxon
dialects (_twee_ [tvE.I] 'two', _Snied'_ [sni:.(d)] 'edge (of a knife or
sword)' > _-sniedig_ '-edged', _Sweert_ [sve:3t] 'sword').

Friendly regards from a North-German-born, Low-Saxon-using and
Lowlands-rocking Aussie-by-choice currently living in Seattle!

Reinhard/Ron
