Subject: Early Pioneers

Hello, this is my first post and if I do something wrong please be
patient with me. I have enjoyed the web ring very much and had thought
there may be some interest in a local book. The book is a story of
Liwwät Böke an immigrant pioneer woman and her husband who settled in
western Ohio as told in her writings and drawings. The book was
translated from Low Saxon to English but still has many of its writings
in Low Saxon. She emigrated from Germany to the United States
(Neuenkirchen to Baltimore) in about 1834, and was married in Cincinnati
in 1835. She was very concious of the importance of history and she
felt records should be kept of the first days in this new country. Her
drawings and writings were translated in the late 1980's and were
published in this book. It is great reading and and provides many
drawings and some maps. I'm not sure if the book can be purchased but
it is listed with the Library of Congress #87-068507. The copywrite is
1987 by the Minster Historical Society, Minster Ohio 45865 and was
printed by Glanz Printing Wauseon, Ohio 43567. I hope you find this as
interesting as I have. Please note I am basically a listener on the web
ring and am not well verse in the languages but I find the information
shared very interesting.

Best Regards,
Nick

Nick,

Thanks a lot, and welcome to the List!

I looked on the web for the title of the book and if it is available at
any of the online vendors. This way I chanced upon an
Ollenborg/Oldenburg site: http://www.uni-oldenburg.de/nausa/auff.htm

If you click on the link "Kein Meisterstück oder: Wie "Liwwät Böke" mit
fremden Federn geschmückt wurde" you will find the details:

Liwwät Böke. 1807-1882: _Pioneer. The story of an immigrant pioneer
woman and her husband who settled in western Ohio as told in her own
writings and drawings_; Luke B. Knapke, ed. Minster, Ohio: The Minster
Historical Society, 1987.

There is an essay about it in German, alleging, as did Marron Fort, that
this work is a fake.

Interesting!

Regards,
Reinhard/Ron
