[English below]

Leve Leeglanners,

Ünner "Grammar" hebbt wi över "doon" ~ "daun" as Hülvsverb diskereert.
Fiete un Holger harrn mi denn noch up 'n wieder Bedüden vun "doon" ~
"daun" as Vullverb anstöten:

Fiete:

> Door wöer obers mijn Tiijd in Osfreesland: "ick dau ...", schall
> heiten
> "ich gebe" (lat: "dare=geben"). Schull mool ünnersöchtt waarn, düsse
> Ünnerscheed tau dat "verbum" " dauhn"= "tuen" = "to do".

Holger:

> This time I just want to draw Your attention to the fact that "daun"
> also
> means "to give, to offer, to fetch" [dau mi: dat bauk = fetch me the
> book].

Ja, "doon" ~ "daun" kann ook so wat as "geven" bedüden, man na mien
Verscheel kann 'n nich jümmers "doon" ~ "daun" seggen, neem 'n "geven"
seggen kann.  Ik glööv', daar liggt so wat as ingelsch _to put_ binnen;
t.B. ...

DO maal dien Muck in 't Schapp trügg!
(Vergl. "hoog"-düütsch "TUE/STELLE mal deinen Becher wieder in den
Schrank.")

Kannst us maal 'n beten Sellschupp DOON.
(HD "LEISTE uns doch mal ein wenig Gesellschaft.")

Wees' maal so good un DO mi dat Sult!
(HD "Sei mal so gut und GEBE/REICHE mir das Salz.")

He wull sachs wedder, dat ik em Geld DO.
(HD "Er wollte sicher wieder, dass ich ihm Geld GEBE/LEIHE.")

Wat DOOT vundaag' de Kantüffeln?
(HD "Wieviel/was KOSTEN heute die Kartoffeln?")

Weett Ji noch mehr?

Dear Lowlanders,

Under "Grammar," we have been discussing 'to do' as an auxiliary verb.
Fiete and Holger reminded me of further meanings of Low Saxon (Low
German) _doon_ ~ _daun_ by pointing out that it can also mean 'to give'.

Yes, this is true, but in my opinion you cannot substitute _geven_ 'to
give' with _doon_ ~ _daun_ in most cases. I have a feeling that at the
bottom of it there is an idea similar to that of English -to put'; e.g.,
...

DO maal dien Muck in 't Schapp trügg!
PUT your mug back into the cupboard!

Kannst us maal 'n beten Sellschupp DOON.
Go on and KEEP us a bit of company!

Wees' maal so good un DO mi dat Sult!
Be so kind as to PASS me the salt!

He wull sachs wedder, dat ik em Geld DO.
He probably wanted me to GIVE/LEND him some money again.

Wat DOOT vundaag' de Kantüffeln?
How much ARE/COST the potatoes today?

Do any of you know of further uses?

Grötens/Regards,
Reinhard/Ron
