Hello again!

I previously mentioned that the current British royal family is the twice
renamed House of Hanover. In 1837, on the death of King William IV of
England - his brother Ernest August took the German title King of Hanover,
while his niece Victoria, became Queen of England. She married Prince
Albert of Saxe-Coburg&Gotha (Belgian I believe) -thus the first name change
- then at the time of the First World War, her grandson, King George V took
the English name Windsor. Meanwhile, the male line of Queen Juliana of the
Netherlands went back to the Grand Dukes of Mecklenburg-Schwerin - another
Lowlands region of Germany!

The last Plantagenet to make a claim on the British throne that I am aware
of was a Stafford who tried to launch a rebellion against the tyranny of
"Bloody" Queen Mary - and lost his head for his troubles. These Staffords
descended from Edward III through four different lines, and left a large
progeny in New England - with at least one female-descended branch
(Hortons) in Nova Scotia. The Duke of Beaufort - head of the Somerset
family - is the senior heir among those Plantagenets who stayed in England.

The generally recognized Stuart heir is (ironically) now a German - the
head of the Bavarian House of Wittelsbach. One of the main complaints of
Stuart supporters (Jacobites) was that the Hanoverians spoke German as
their first language (of course Bonnie Prince Charlie's first language was
French - but his father James III - the "Old Pretender" to his foes - spoke
English.)
