Instead, let's use the following, eh?  ;-)

[raUt] vs. [rut]  for "route"

[krIk] vs. [krik] for "creek"

[rUf] vs. [ruf] for "roof"

Then we'll all "hear" what we're writing [@baUt], [@boUt], etc.
