Doug,

Re. Bilabial 'f' in Scots.

I may have misunderstood your post, and I'm not a
phonetics expert.

However, I understand you to be suggesting that /f/
replaces /hw/ is some dialects of Scots? This is
certainly the case in Northeast Scotland, and may
remain the case in County Donegal Scots (I've read it
but never heard it).

I must honestly say that I don't know of any
authoritative works that suggest this for Ulster
Scots, however. There is an issue of bilabial 'f' used
in Belfast English, Alison Henry's work may be a
source of this.

A lot of Ulster-Scots activists do confuse Belfast
English with Ulster Scots - clearly, however, for most
linguistic purposes they are quite distinct.
