Ron

I have come across the word plaat in the USA. When I bought my property
in the Catskills, it was referred to in the pile of documents as a plaat
in the Hardenburgh patent. The Hardenburghs were Patroons who owned much of
upstate New York up to the 1840's. I think the word has a similar origin
as the English word "plot". I had wondered at the time if the word plaat
was
English or Dutch. Law is conservative and a word that has been in use
since Dutch colonial days might very well still be in use today in a legal
setting. I have never seen the word used outside a real estate/legal
setting. I wonder if the word is in use in states that were not
originally Dutch colonies?
