Hello Lowlanders!

At the moment there is a discussion on Gotland about the teaching of
Gutamål, that is the speciell dialect of the island. One might even think
it's a language of its own. I'm not quite sure what is true. The differences
to standard-Swedish are great and speakers of Gutamål are not understood by
other swedish persons. The dialect has a lot of diphthongs, I believe that's
making it hard to understand.
Here is a commentary quoted from Gotlands Tidningar:

Är gutamål ett hemspråk för få eller kultur för alla?

Socialdemokraten Wera Svensson och centerns Eva Gahnström motionerade i
fullmäktige om mer undervisning i gutamål i de gotländska skolorna. Deras
krav var tämligen hovsamma och fullmäktiges beslut blev ännu mer till intet
förpliktigande.
Barn- och utbildningsnämnden "uppmanas överväga" att i sina måldokument
införa åtagandet att alla elever ska ges möjlighet att lyssna på och läsa
gutamål. Det ger ansvarig utbildningsnämnd fria händer att göra ingenting,
lite grand eller mycket.
frågan är hur man ska se på gutamålet i skolan. Gutamålet är ju unte någon
svensk dialekt, utan en utveckling från forngutniskan. Den gotländska
dialekten är vacker och högst begriplig för allra flesta svenskar.
Medan gutamålet är oftast helt obegripligt för de flesta svenskar och
gotlänningar. Jag har ingen aning om vad Eva Gahnström sade på gutamål i
början av sitt anförande i fullmäktige. Men hon kanske ville utestänga alla
icke gutamålskunniga från innehållet i hennes anförande.
Kanske talas gutamål vardagligen i en del familjer och i en del socknar på
Gotland. I så fall skulle man kunna jämföra gutamålsstudier med
hemspråksundervisning i arabiska, serbiska eller ryska som våra invandrare
får.
Det har ju vista sig att hemspråksundervisning bidrar till att de unga lär
sig svenska bättre, så därför kunde det var befogat att de elever på Gotland
som har gutamålet som ett levande vardagsspråk får hemspråksundervisning i
gutamål.
Däremot kan det väl aldrig bli tal om att skoltid sätts av för regelrätt
språkundervisning i gutamål, annat än som just lyssnande och lite läsande
någon gång under skoltidn, så alla elever får nosa på gutamålet. Det finns
ju en del mycket populära visor på gutamål, som sjungs på allehanda fester
och glada tillställningar. Då är gutamålet kultur och öns skolor borde se
som sitt uppdrag att ge de unga kunskapen om gutamålet som kulturyttring.
Skolans språkundervisning måste ha som mål att alla blir så bra som möjligt
i det språk som vi svenskar talar, nämligen svenskan.
Det vore ett misstag och en otjänst mot eleverna om tids själs från
svenskundervisningen till att lära sig gutamålet. Både i vardagslivet,
yrkeslivet och i kommunfullmäktige gäller det ju att tala en svenska så man
blir förstådd.
Att använda ett språk handlar om kommunikation där alla förstår vad man
säger. Den gotländska skolan måste ägna all kraft åt svenskundervisningen.
Sedan kan gutamålet tas upp i sången och kulturen.

Socialdemokrat Wera Svensson and Centerpolitician Eva Gahnström made a
motion in the kommunal administration for more teaching of Gutamål in the
schools of Gotland. Their demand was pretty modest and the decison of the
administration wasn't more than without obligation.
The office children and teaching was "asked to think about" to claim that
every pupil shall have the possibility to hear and read Gutamål. This gives
the office free hand to do nothing, a bit or a lot.
The question is how one has to look upon Gutamål in the schools. Gutamål is
no sweidish dialect but a development from Old-Gothic. The dialect of
Gotland is beautiful and mostb understandable for most of the swedish.
But Gutamål is mostly totally not-understandable for most of the swedish and
inhabitants of Gotland. I've got no idea what E. Gahnström said in gutamål
in the beginning of her speech in the administration. But maybe she wnated
to exclude all those who don't know Gutamål from the meaning of her speech.
Maybe Gutamål is used everyday in some families and in some communities on
Gotland. In that case teaching Gutamål would be similar to the teaching of
homelanguage in arab, serbian or russian that the immigrants get.
It has been proved that teaching the homelanguae helps the pupils in
learning swedish better, so therefor it might be right to teach those pupils
on Gotland in Gutamål who use it as an everyday-language.
However, it can not be that schooltime is used for a regular teaching of
Gutamål, something different from just listening and a bit reading some time
while in school, so that all pupils had a chance to get a touch of Gutamål.
There are a lot of popular songs in Gutamål to be sung on feasts and meery
meetings. Then Gutamål is a part of culture and the sdchools of the island
should take it as their task to give the pupils the knowledge about Gutamål
as a part of culture.
The school's teaching of language has to have as an aim that all are as good
as possible in the language we swedish talk, that is swedish.
It would be a fault and no good for the pupils if time would be taken of the
teaching of swedish to teach them Gutamål. In everyday's live, in the
economic live, and in the administration is it the meaning to talk swedish
to be understood.
To use a language is a question of kommunikation in which everyone
understands what is said. The schools on Gotland have to own all their power
to the teaching of swedish. Then Gutamål can be a part of song and culture.)
