Further to Peter's (or anyone else's) research on the "White Lady"
phenomenon, below are several useful links.

May we expect a summary -- informative as well as spooky -- by Halloween?
It looks as though a pre-Christian goddess or angel figure "deteriorated" to
the point of becoming simply a spook.

Note the idea of white lady hauntings fiddling around with locks and door
handles.  This was taken up by Klaus Groth, although he does not mention a
white lady per se:
