I hear this said pronunciation in English as a [w] with simultaneous
aspiration, i.e. [h]. I think some speakers pronounce it [hw], i.e. [h]
preceding [w]. In international phonetic script (IPA) it is written [hw] or
[Æ•] (an h + italic v ligature), I think."

a-HA! Got it! AND: that explains why I was 'at sea' over this. The only
thing I could think of was OE "Hwaet!"

Having been born and raised in Southern California, I never heard this hw
manner of speaking. Californians to this day have a self-imposed mandate to
deliver as much information as possible in the shortest amount of time thus
prohibiting such flourishes as hw's. As a matter of example, I should think
that a Californian's idea of Hell would be having to sit and listen to Lady
Bracknell recite the phonebook!

Dank vielmal for your helpful and 'hwurthy' explanation, Ron!

issues . . .)
