Subject: Institutions in the Lowlands

It is difficult for us to understand the internal political and
administrative structures of lowland countries, other than our own (and even
understanding things in our own may be difficult).
I have some questions below about the territorial structures of "Inner
Temple" and "Middle Temple".
Some info pasted from the web is preceeding my questions.

1 - pasted from:
http://en2.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greater_London
Greater London
Comprising most of the built-up area of London, the capital of the United
Kingdom, the administrative area of Greater London covers the 1579 km2 of
the 32 London boroughs, the small City of London and __Inner_Temple__ and
__Middle_Temple__.

2 - pasted from:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inns_of_Court
The Inns of Court, in London, are where barristers train and practise. They
were originally any of a number of public houses where barristers met to do
business, but are now formal institutions.
Over time, the number of active Inns of Court reduced to just four:
Lincoln's Inn, Gray's Inn, Inner Temple and Middle Temple. They are located
near the western border of the City of London, surrounding the Royal Courts
of Justice.
__Middle_Temple__ and __Inner_Temple__ are located just to the east of the
border of the City of London with the City of Westminster, but are not part
of the City of London, being recognised by law as local authorities. The
closest tube station is Temple.
Gray's Inn and Lincoln's Inn are in the London Borough of Camden (formerly
in the Borough of Holborn), just by the border with the City of London. They
have no such status as local authorities. The nearest tube station is
Chancery Lane.

3 - a map of the __inner_temple__ area is on page:
http://www.innertemple.org.uk/index2.htm
or the map directly:
http://www.innertemple.org.uk/map.gif

I did not find a map for the __middle_temple__ area.

4 - page http://en2.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_boroughs
lists the 32 boroughs of Greater london:
- 12 inner boroughs
- 20 outer borougks
London City and both Temples are not classified as borough.

5 - The list of constituencies of the GLA (Greater London Authority) on
page:
http://www.london.gov.uk/assembly/constituencies.jsp
does not clarify to which constituency "Inner Temple" and "Middle Temple"
belong.

6 - In the GLA act
http://www.hmso.gov.uk/acts/acts1999/90029-ai.htm#sch1ptI
The rules about Assembly constituencies
[...] (2) For the purposes of the rules in sub-paragraph (1) above-
(a) any reference to a London borough includes a reference to the City of
London, which for this purpose shall be taken to include the Inner Temple
and the Middle Temple [...]

7 - City of London (Approved Premises for Marriage) Act 1996
http://www.hmso.gov.uk/cgi-bin/htm_hl.pl?DB=hmso-new&STEMMER=en&WORDS=inner+templ+&COLOUR=Red&STYLE=s&URL=http://www.hmso.gov.uk/acts/locact96/Ukla_19960004_en_1.htm#muscat_highlighter_first_match
quote:
WHEREAS- [...]
(3) By ancient custom the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple and the
Honourable Society of the Middle Temple exercise powers within the areas of
the Inner Temple and the Middle Temple respectively ("the Temples")
concerning (inter alia) the regulation and governance of the Temples:
(4) The Master of the Temple as holder from the Crown of the office of
incumbent of the Temple Church exercises within the Temple those special
privileges of the Crown which relate to his office:
[...]4.-(1) As soon as practicable after receiving an application relating
to any premises situated within the Inner Temple or the Middle Temple the
common council shall notify the Sub-Treasurer of the Honourable Society of
the Inner Temple (as respects premises in the Inner Temple) and the Under
Treasurer of the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple (as respects
premises in the Middle Temple).
[...]5. Nothing in this Act shall prejudice or affect any right, power or
privilege of the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple, the Honourable
Society of the Middle Temple or the Master of the Temple.

Can anybody clarify what the territorial status and competence of both
Temples is?
How are they represented in the GLA (to which constituency do they belong?)?
They clearly do not belong to the City of London. The City is in the GLA
constituence of "City and East London" (Barking and Dagenham, City of
London, Newham, Tower Hamlets)

Thanks for all clarification.

Regards,

Roger
