From: Roger Thijs, Euro-Support, Inc. <roger.thijs at euro-support.be>
Subject: Resources

When we have some time, we continue moving some old files about dialects
from
http://www.euro-support.be/langbel/langbel.htm
to the new site
http://home-13.tiscali-business.nl/%7Etpm09245/lang/langbel.htm
(officially the URL is:
  http://home.tiscali-business.be/~tpm09245/lang/langbel.htm
but this is aliased to the "home-13...nl" server, by action of the
provider)

We incidentally get some questions when things will be done completely, but,
since we do a little review of each page before transfering, this will take
some time. For as far as not transferred, old pages can still be read from
the old server.

We will not report page by page how the transfer is progressing.
We just think it is worthwhile to mention we doubled the length of the
quoted old text in:
http://home-13.tiscali-business.nl/~tpm09245/dutch/abies/aabies.htm
It is not included under the "dialect" topic anymore, but under "old written
Dutch in the South":
http://home-13.tiscali-business.nl/~tpm09245/dutch/dutch.htm

This page
http://home-13.tiscali-business.nl/~tpm09245/dutch/abies/aabies.htm
includes some excerpts from the oldest extensive land register in the
Southern Netherlands. It dates from 1280 on, and concerns the land of the
castle of the Teutonic Order in Alden Biesen.
I also added a aerial view of the castle, as it looks today.

Peculiar I think is the use of genitives at the end of phrases:

... ende woren Heinrics Kuckels
... and were of Henry Kuckel

.... ende woren Heinrics Trudens soens
... and were of the suns of Henry Truden
(Truden by itself  is an old genitive with -en suffix: "of Trud(o?)";
as far as I'm aware, the genitive form with -en was mainly used in
name-giving)

Also the old texts help us to avoid making false etymologies:
For the municipality of "Rijkhoven" one thinks on "Rijk/Reich + hoven"
In the old text: one finds "Rudekoven": so hof (farm) of Rud...

Rijkhoven (now part of Bilzen, in the South of Belgian Limburg), did not
have a parish church of it's own. The inhabitants went to church in the
chapel of the castle, which is separated from the main building, as one can
see on the picture (chapel nr 5 v/ main castle nr 11) .
What is now maked nr. 6 on the picture was a two floors building in ancient
times, and served as hospital for the knights who eventually survided the
crusades. As one can see, it was adjacent to the chapel, which, no doubt,
may have been efficient...

Regards,

Roger
