Ron,
Enjoyed your take on the Sounds of the South. When I was stationed in
Texas I used to hear the word
"oil" rendered as "a:wl"  There was considerably more lip rounding and
they seemed to lengthen the
sound and draw it out...at the same time the aw: seemed to front and
heighten with a noticeable jaw
movement. I remember saying to the speaker [who was cleaning his rifle
with gun oil] "ARe you
serious? Can't you pronounce oil?" HIs reply was "That's what Ah
sayid...aw:l..." It is hard to render the
appropriate lengthening of some of the southern forward gliding
diphthongs--they seemed to put "jaw"
movement into it in addition to the forward and rising tongue movements.
Texans, bless 'em, consider Texas a country, not a state. Glad you're
safely home.
