I don't think there is a problem. Just the Canadians use a word that is
different from the French on their traffic signs. And the Canadian word
sounds more "Romance" than the French one.

Lionel Meney lists it (p.104) in his "Dictionnaire Québécois - Français",
1999, Montréal, Guérin, ISBN 2-7601-5482-3, xxxiv + 1884 pp.

Translation from Canadian French into French French:

arrêt (n.masc.):
1° [panneau routier indiquant un arrêt obligatoire]: stop (n. masc., anglic.
cour.)
[..] faire un arrêt:   respecter le stop; faire le stop.[...]

Semantically (in French French) it's all about a subtility between a
"mandatory stop" and an "optional stop"
