Mike Szelog asked:

> What is the ultimate etymology of the word "Mass"?

I had learned (in Catholic grade school) that "Mass"
comes from the Latin "missa, missum," past participle
of "mittere" (to send, release). This came from
the closing Latin phrase "Ite, missa est," equivalent
to, "Go, (the gathering) is dismissed."
