Hello Mike,

In Flemish we use also the word "kermis". When i look at all the
explanations i find two general possibilities:
kermis (E: fair- G:Kirmes- V: kermesse):
1 from "kerk" and "mis"
The first fairs took place on the feast of the parish' saint. The
market place was almost always in front of the church. And the fair
could'nt start but after the mass.
2 from" kerk" and "messe"
Messe being the same word as in German, D/V: jaarmarkt, E: (annual)
fair.

groetjes
