ay Tam, the'r different dialects o Scots. tak a wee keek at the Introduction
ti the Concise Scots Dictionary, an it'll airt ye ti the thing in mair
detail.

for Sassunachs an ithers, Scots dialects ir:
South-East (Border Country an Dumfriesshire, but juist a wee bit o
Peeblesshire)
South West (Gallowa an therawa)
East Central (south) Embro, Fawkirk, Stirling an roon aboot
East Central (north) Fife, Dundee, Perthshire.
West Central Glesga an roon aboot
North-East Aiberdeen an roon aboot
Northern Caithness, Orkney, Shetland
Ulster (roon aboot Bushmills - whaur they mak yin o the best whiskies gaun,
tae!)

Aye, Ah'd agree. Ahm frae Duns, in Berwickshire which is aboot as far in the
sooth-east as ye kin get in Scotland. Ah'd say Ah hid mair oh the Embro
dialect than yirsel. Mind, tha disnae mean Ah kin read Irvine Welsh easily
tho! He's uising mair o a Scots equivalent tae "Estuary Inglis", wi a bit o
an artifeecal patois o Embro and Glesgae dialects. Wan thing Ah've noticed
wi Scots, and Ah guess it's true fur onie langage, is tha as ye hear fowk
fae different pairts o the kintra, the balance o accent and dialect shifts.
Listen tae fowk fae the sooth-west (yirsel) and fae the sooth-east (masel),
and then listen tae a teuchter! Ye'll hear a big difference in accent and in
dialect. I guess its wan o the problems facing Scots as a langage, is it's
gie herd tae unify it intae yin langage - mind, shuid ye? Tha's a hael
different debate, fur fowk far brighter as me! Wan o ma favourite accents /
dialects is Shetlandic, mainly fur the stronger Norse & Gaelic infuences his
geen it a mair "sing song" lilt.
