Here in this interesting text. One can see how it is a pity that  the
"Lowland" regions did not maintain a close relationship enough to build
together on a language that could have been spoken over a big area in
Europe. Dutch and Flemish, Zeelandic and Low German,... are still very
close to one another. If i read the text without knowing its
background, i could presume a lot of regions/countries were it could
have come from.
Flanders has been several times overlooked by historians, but there is
many a link to be found in relation to the European history (especially
French Flanders). I think one of the reasons was the suffocating role
of the French nobility towards the Flemish culture or anything that
could suggest a "German" background.Thus forgetting or ignoring their
own origines.
