Hey Denis,

in the matter of South-Flanders (French-Flanders) one does not may forget
that because of the french general Foch in WW I especialy flemish soldiers
were send to
the dangeroused places at the front.
And it may be so that many South-Flemings do not speak Flemish enymore,
but they do are aware of their flemish Identity, even more as the Flemings
in belgium Flanders.
This is quite good to see when you are in South-Flanders. And that may give
hope that they
try to learn their mothertongue again.
But I fear also for the flemish in belgium Flanders. When I went to school
in Wevelgem (W-Vlaanderen)
we had to speak ABN (Algemeen "Beschaafd" Nederlands). The teachers saw it
as an act ofimpoliteness
to speak out mothertongue. And if a hear now the youth in W-Vlaanderen they
speak more AN (now it is
called "Algemeen Nederlands") as that they speak West-Flemish.
The second war has not much to do that flemish is associated with the german
invader.
There has always been a strong antipathy for flemish by the french and
belgian gouvernement.
Even now litle or nothing has changed. Still they try to wipe out the
flemish Identity,
it is just a bit harder now because they have to support their actions with
democratic rules,
and people now a days are better educated and they cannot so easely be
fooled around with
as in the past. But then again, there are other tricks to fool the people in
a "democratic" state.
