With everybody talking about regional dialects of English a memory was
triggered. I was on holiday in Devon / Cornwall a number of years ago and
while driving listened to a radio programme in which a physician (GP) from
Portsmouth was interviewed. (Very good anecdotes, by the by.) It struck me
that the accent this (70+) gentleman had was very similar to some American
accents. Now, I don't remember the details anymore that made me think that,
but as Portsmouth was a major harbour, it would not be far off to think that
people from that area, emigrating to the US would have left their
linguistical mark. Anyone care to expand?
