Spanking isn't an English tradition. In England, children used to be
given 'the bumps' (held by arms and legs, and gently, or not-so-gently
bounced on the ground, once for each year) by their peers.
At work, people do bring in a cake or biscuits on their birthday; but
drinking with friends, other buy the drinks.

What I do, as a visitor to friends in the Low Countries, find
fascinating, is the back-of-the-toilet-door calendar with everyone's
birthday on it.

With best wishes to all,

Pat
(still more interested in the material culture than the folklore or the
language, obviously!)
