Tom McRae wrote (in reply to Pat):
"In Scotland, at least in the Lothians, a schoolkids was gien his/her
"Dumps" on their birthday by most other kids in his school class and the
street where he/she lived."

It was the "bumps" in Nottingham. I suppose the severity of the
"congratulations" depended on the community. It got quite brutal at my
school: there was a canal right next to the field, and everyone was chucked
in it on their birthday - even if that birthday was in January and the thing
was frozen over! I was always glad to have a birthday in the summer
holidays. I remember there was a rhyme much like Tom McRae's, too, although
it was not consistent enough that I remembered it. The "bumps" were also
done in Cornwall, with the same ritual of "dumping" the victim in the
nearest water feature (usually a pond).

Go raibh maith agaibh,

Críostóir.
