Subject: Traditions

In France the tradition is/was that when a girl got her first period her
mother would slap her face. I wondered if this might be related to the Roman
custom of striking a slave when giving him/her his/her freedom. In principle
the girl is now a woman and free from chastisement (at least till she gets
married). I'd better delete that in case someone suggests that I am in
favour of spousal abuse. Does any similar custom occur in the cultures of
interest to us?

This "bumping" thing also seems to be connected to the American (and
probably Britsh?) tradition of violent, ritualistic "hazing" of newcomers in
schools colleges, sports teams, fraternities etc., which I haven't
encountered or heard about in this form anywhere else. What these youngsters
do to people who are supposed to belong to their own group of "friends"
often goes way overboard, even leading to serious injuries and death.

The only related Dutch and German tradition I can think of (and it's
probably practiced by people of other nationalities as well) is the mild
abuse of passengers on a ship who cross the equator for the first time.

Why is it called "hazing", anyway?
