I wouldn't have objected if you hadn't exaggerated.

But they're not tall tales.

I'm deaf to many things!

That's what you think! :)

I'd agree with Tom from my own perspective. I like to watch various cable
News services including SKY, CNN, FOX, and BBC. All those stations now have
English announcers with a good range of accents. There are even some Scots
announcers doing a great job I detect both Edinburgh and Glasgow accents
among them.

There was a hilarious case reported on Oz TV a few years ago where an
English vicar with a posh Home Counties accent was posted to Yorkshire. His
parishioners complained that they had difficulty understanding his plummy
accent and the feature showed him frantically learning the Yorkshire
dialecr.

Hello All,

I dont' t live in the UK currently, but I have noticed quite a change in
perspective as to Scottish accent in recent years. I believe this is due
to Ministers of the Realm using the accent.

In other words, I think accent is not linguistically important, only
politcally - power - important. If someone with power speaks in a
certain accent, Robin Cook, The PM, The Chancellor of the Exchequer,
then the accent is of import. If William Wallance speaks in a Scottish
accent, then it is of no importance, because he is not a powerful
character. except in the 21st, cent and because of an Australian
actor...

Accent is not LINGUISTIC, it is POLITICAL, that is, pertaining to the
power of the status quo.

My best bet is to adopt the accent of the ruling party - that way you
will be associated with the powerful group.

Good (linguistic) luck,

Tam
