Please replace ***Valenciennois*** here with Avesnois.

Since, for the regional elections in France, I got some mail from
nationalist movements, I collected some general data from the web. Since
some pages are hard to log (popped up by Macromedia flash player), I picked
some screens in Paint Shop Pro before saving them in jpg format.
Since I think the material may be interesting for several people on the
list, I pasted the pictures in some doc files, with the the original URLs
added as comment in the text.
I did not convert to adobe acrobat, so it is possible to pick the images in
the doc files.

I leave this doc files for a couple of days in a temporary directory.

The region "Nord-Pas-de-Calais" in France combines the departments Nord and
Pas-de-Calais.
It coincides with the historical region "Pays-Bas français": the territories
of the Netherlands in the South-West ceded to France in the 17th and 18th
centuries.

Maps of the region Nord-Pas-de-Calais in France.
- page 6: map with the celtic tribe areas
- page 7: the evolution of the Saxon coast line
- page 8: historical map
  - Flandre: part of Flanders ceded to France
    - "Flandre gallicante" or "Flandre wallonne": the French speaking part
corresponds to the chatellenies of Lille, Douai and Orchies
the dialect classicifiation is not walloon but picard
(South of the river Leie or Lys)
    - "Flandre flamingante" or "Westhoek"
the area where Flemish dialects are (where?) spoken
(North of the river Leie or Lys)
- page 9: the tourist landscapes
- page 19: the tourist lanscapes as to the Michelin regional maps

Gives some maps of the Nord department
- location in France and detailed maps, all from the SPLAF site
(specialisezd in history of administrative borders)
- the tourist landscapes (p. 10 ff) with lists of the municipalities.
Historically odd is that the new "Hainaut" for tourists combines the
Valenciennois (old Hainaut) with Douai & Orchies (both: old Flanders) and
the Cambrésis (old ecclesiasitical territory), but excludes the
Valenciennois (old Hainaut)

6 reports with the history of the French Netherlands:

http://www.euro-support.be/temp/nphist_1.doc (290 k)
The prehistoric + celtic periods

http://www.euro-support.be/temp/nphist_2.doc (340 k)
The Roman period, with early Germanic influences.
Does anybody have an idea why the crucified virgin with a beard (Sainte
Wilgeforte, p. 5) is associated with "Saxon" legends?

http://www.euro-support.be/temp/nphist_3.doc (350 k)
Early Middle ages.
Does anybody have an idea where the "Ruthenes"-"Jutes" combination is coming
from? (map p. 1)
On the map p 1 the Saces, Saxons, are present all along the see shore (mixed
with some Jutes), but later (page 4, map on top) the Saxons are located just
in the Boulonnais area.

Concerning the map on the bottom (page 4).
I think it is not completely clear why the "Vier Ambachten", now basically
in "Zeeuws Vlaanderen". were part of the German Empire and not part of the
French kingdom. Ecclesiastically they belonged to the bishopric of Utrecht.
The river Schelde was supposed to divide France and
Northern-Lotharingia/Germany in that area. The only feasable hypothesis I
find in history books is that the river Schelde (Westerschelde) was situated
more to the South originally.

http://www.euro-support.be/temp/nphist_4.doc (340 k)
The period of the wars between France and England

http://www.euro-support.be/temp/nphist_5.doc (970 k)
The period of Burgondy and the Spanish and Austrian periods.
Interesting, I think, is, p. 10-11, how Flanders was divided, as a result of
4 treaties (4 maps, I found some small inaccuracies, but basically it
explains how the territory was moving)

I will leave these doc files for a couple of days on the server.
