Hi all sound recorders,

My personal experiments with recording sound may perhaps interest you.
To record the voice of dialect speakers I used a reliable tape deck and
a good unidirectional mike. Never record sound on a deck when a computer
is switched on near by: the result will be an annoying background noise
and general degradation of the recording. Afterwards I connected the
deck line out to the line in of the computer. In order to digitalize the
sound I used Sonic Foundry Sound Forge. Be sure to use 16 bit-depth and
a sampling rate of 44.100 Hz. These were the only settings that yielded
good results. It took me some time to discover this. Sound Forge allows
you to correct a large number of flaws in the original analogue
recordings. Using a programme like Nero the digital sound files can be
burnt on CD either as MP3 files or as WAV files (for common CD-players).
MP3 is fine for the web. The CDs I produced were perhaps not top-notch,
did not achieve ultimate perfection but were certainly very
satisfactory. Try to create the best possible analogue recordings;
digitalizing will normally not deteriorate your files.
I hope you may find these remarks useful.

Kind regards,

Roger Hondshoven
