Dit lit sjen dat it Nederlânske wurd eins "kuis" wêze moatten hie, want dit
giet werom op in Aldgermaanske [u:]. Mar yn it Frysk is it ek "kies" [ki. at s]
(meartal "kiezzen" [kjIz(@)n]) en dit komt út *kees < ku:s+i (dus mei
omlûd!). It Nederlânsk hat dit dus út in Yngweoanske fariëteit skipe, en yn
in stadium dat se it bygelyks as e_2 liene koene (lykas "brief" en
"priester" en "liet" (doetiid fan "laten") ek fan e_2 nei [i] feroare
binne), of yn in letter tiidrek, doe't it yn it Frysk ek al [i.@] wie...
Dit is mei "ladder" en "klaver" miskjin wol de faakst foarkommende
Frysk/Yngweoanske lienwurden yn it Nederlânsk.

    All right!

    Contracting civil engineers in South Africa, 'Savage & Lovemore'. A firm
of undertakers in the Cape Boland, 'Human & Pitt'.

    While we're on the subject, a culling of names from the Pretoria
Telephone Directory:
    Human = human
    Kaal = naked
    Kalkemmer = lime bucket
    Niemand = nobody
    Koekemoer - which I will not translate.

    This name tickles English-speaking South Africans: A small town in the
Northern Transvaal called 'Monsterlus' = monstrous appetite (lust - to all
appearances). Another place called
'Tweebuffelsmeteenskootmorsdoodgeskietfontein' commemerating 'the spring
where two buffalo were killed stone dead with one shot'.

    Die is vir Ron: Onder die eerste straatname in Pretoria, ter herdenking
aan ene burgher 'Vom Hagen'. Vir 'n Afrikaner klink dit bra eienaardig, want
die taal stem nie met die stad se plaaslikke taal ooreen nie. In die kontrei
weet ons net van een 'Den Haag', nè?
