Andy asked: "Would that be the First Gulf War 1980-1988 Hussein V's Khomeini
or the First Gulf War 1991 Hussein V's Rest of the World?"

I decline to answer on the grounds that I don't know what the supplementary
will be. But I lean towards thinking that I probably meant since 1991,
assuming that's the right date. Since my thought was that if I didn't put in
this caveat someone would accuse me of supporting the invasion of Iraq I'm
pretty sure that that was it. I don't think "Damascus" would have had the
same resonance for an English-speaking audience earlier. Unless of course
you want to dredge up T E Lawrence and the betrayal of the Arabs in the
1920s.
