Subject: Phonology

"Rout" for "route" is used by the British Army and I thought was also
standard in the US Army.

According to Onions "route" was "readopted" in C16 so plausibly we have a
spelling unaffected by the Great Vowel Shift for that reason. In the UK
paper boys (or should I say "juvenile paper-persons"?) and delivery drivers
have "rounds" not "routes". Do custodians and rent-a-cops in the US "make
their rounds" or is there some other expression?
