I, for one, would disagree that the "might" forms have almost disappeared.
I believe that I use "might" more frequently than "may".  Of course, I may
be mistaken (joke intended).

Really, I live in Texas and I grew up here.  Just off the top of my head,
I'd say that we Texans use the "might" form more frequently than "may".  The
"may" form has a more formal feeling to me, and even might (notice might)
convey some affectation or pretentiousness.  Could it be a Southern thing?

I suppose I could have put that a bit more elegantly as in:
many deaf-and-blind guides were deaf.
