Hello Lowlanders,
It seems to be the common consensus of the participants of this strain that
Werpen is obsolete in Dutch, but it still occurs in many compound nouns
like:
Speerwerper, (spearchucker) Vlammenwerper, (flamethrower) and even
Voorwerp(item or object) and Onderwerp (subject). And of course the verb
verwerpen (to dismiss out of hand) and verwerpelijk ( morally
unacceptable ) And I also distinctly remember people talking about met
dobbelstenen werpen i.s.o gooien throw the dice.
Another thing is that in Dutch gooien is the common verb and smijten is
not quite pejorative, but it smells a bit. Is that also true for other
lowland languages? Jacqueline
