On the subject of crows, ravens, and other members of the corvid family,
here's a lovely link:
http://www.shades-of-night.com/aviary/corvidae.html

Crows are rather common around here (eastern Ontario, Canada), and I've seen
the occasional blue jay, but I've never seen any others. I've only seen a
raven in the flesh once in my life, and I was in the mountains in British
Columbia.

I suspect that unlike the other Romance names for raven, the French comes
from a diminutive, corvellus, because the -eau ending seems, in most cases,
to come from -ellus. It could, however, be a loan from Italian or Spanish
('corvo' in both, I believe), with the ending respelled to look more French.
