Haai almal,

Ja, Ingmar, Arabies klink mooi op die oor.

Garieb is sooo 'n tipiese San woord en die mening dat die woord
enigiets anders as San (óf Nama) kon wees, het my 'jikes' ontlok!

Belangrikste is dat almal nou weet dat Gariep Afrika en nie Arabies is nie
:-)

Terloops, die !g is nie 'n harde [x] klank nie, maar (en ek skryf onder
korreksie)
'n dentale kliek voor die [g].

ek had nie goed gelees jou mail dat het gesê dat dit van Khoe
!Garib het gekom nie...
Maar waarom noem jy dit dat "jikes"? Arabies is een baie mooie taal, nê?
En die Arabiese kultuur is ook pragtig. Of bedoel jy die feit dat ek dat
het geskryf is 'jikes' ;-)?

Miskien lyk "Gariep" (Garib) Arabies weens die bekende Arabiese woorde غَرْب
_gharb_ 'wes', غَرْبِ٠ّ _gharbiy_ 'wes toe', 'westlik', مَغَارِبُ
_(al-)maghaarib_ '(die) wes', en مَغْرِب _(al-)maghrib_ '(die) Wes',
'Marokko', ook Engels _maghrib_ '(Mohammedanies) aandgebed' en _Maghribi_
'Noordwes-Afrika'.

Dis baie interessant dat 'n paar Nguni-(-Bantoe-)tale van Suid-Afrika, ten
minste Zoeloe en Xhosa ( [ǁʰosa]), ook kliekklanke het, waarskynlik weens
Khoisan-substrata. Gevolkelik het hulle twee interessante kenmerkens:

(1) kliek-tale (< Khoisan)
(2) toon-tale (< Bantoe)*

(* Swahili, die "grootste" Bantoe-taal, is geen toon-taal nie, mieschien
omdat dit as 'n Arabies-Bantoe pidgin het begin.)

Kan baie Afrikaans- en Engels-sprekers in Suid-Afrika die kliekklanke
uitspreek?  Hoe spreek hulle "Xhosa" uit?  Leer nou baie van hulle Xhosa
en/of Zoeloe?
